Hipparchus: Virgo I
Hipparchus’ alignments in Virgo – this chapter and the next – are among the most complex of the starlines of VII.i. We’ll need two chapters to address them.
In this chapter, we look at some lines which point to Arcturus, with a modern understanding of the movement of Arcturus.
We also investigate the stories the Greeks associated with these stars, histories and tales which today we call myth. Werewolves are involved.
It makes for a long chapter.
We present the star alignments of VII.i in order, as presented (presumably) by Ptolemy originally.
Chapter 3 presents a set of complex alignments – perhaps the most complicated of any in VII.i. That fact fits the narrative we’re developing regarding the textual history of this bit of text.
However, digging into these stars at the depth required seems a quick way to scare off hesitant readers.
We propose that readers skim or skip this chapter for now, returning to it when you’ve got more background information to inform your reading of this chapter.
If you’re bored by the intermission show, you might come back here then.
Otherwise, we’ll try to remind you around Chapter 15 or 20 or thereabouts.
You know the drill by now.
